My artwork aims to memorialise victims of ‘honour’ killings by displaying free-standing wooden frames that have been inspired by Islamic architecture. A collection of these resembles a graveyard due to the shape of the frame. The materiality of the wood creates a domestic feel that is relevant to the subject manner as this crime occurs within family homes. The technique of carving designs into the wood mirrors the act of viciousness involved in the brutal murder of these women. Remnants of Asian garments dressed behind the frames reference culture, gender and violence. These women were silenced through death and so the absence of the female body and thus identification depicts their lack of autonomy. Illuminating the coloured garments with lights creates an ethereal experience, similar to that of stained-glass windows. The timetabled silence during the exhibition of my work provides the audience with the opportunity to ‘honour’ these innocent women.
