As part of the Army Roadshow (10-11 November) on campus we are very lucky to have a talk from Major Heather Stanning MBE, taking place on Thursday 10th November, at 11am.

Heather Stanning wrote her name into the history books at both the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic Games with golden performances alongside Helen Glover in the women’s pair.

Heather – a graduate of the GB Rowing Team Start Programme, the ground-breaking talent identification and development initiative supported by National Lottery funding – is also a serving Major with the 32nd Regiment Royal Artillery.

Law: It’s not just for Law students!

7th November – Prepare for the Law Fair – 5pm
Come and learn the tricks of making the most of the Law Career Fair before you go. This session is jointly delivered by Law Careers Consultant Lucy Hawkins, and a legal recruiter who is willing to share the secrets of what works – and doesn’t – when it comes to impressing firms at a fair.

9th November – Law for Non Lawyers – 1pm (Palmer)
Lead-in session for the fair for non-law students. Jointly run with the University of Law.

9th November – Law Fair 2016 – 2pm (Palmer) – download our Law Fair guide for further information on the firms and course providers attending. If you’re interested in a career in Law, don’t miss the Law Fair! There’s no need to book a place for the Fair – you can drop in any time between 2 and 4 pm. Come along for the opportunity to meet employers, network, and learn more about the career options available to you. 14th November – Law applications – 1pm
Applying for careers in Law can be competitive – how can you make sure that you and your application stand out from the crowd? Come to this session for help and advice on making law applications, and impressing potential employers in the field at the Law Careers Fair.

15th November – Stand out from the crowd – 6pm Palmer G03 – Led by BPP
This workshop is tailored to helping you succeed in the application process. Avoiding the application pitfalls, answering competency based questions and having a successful interview. 

2nd December – NationalLawLIVE, The Museum of Science & Industry, Manchester.
An immersive, full-day event looking at the economics of national firms, what they do, how a career might progress and the life of lawyers working in this sort of business. It is timed to maximise the benefit to students intending to apply for 2017 vacation schemes. Firms that will be present include Shoosmiths, Clyde & Co and Osborne Clarke. Closing date for applications: 28 October 2016. Students can apply for places via the NationalLawLIVE website.

Land a place on the ‘Civil Service Fast Stream’ with Kevin Thompson’s Top Tips!

This autumn, our very own professional Careers Consultant Kevin Thompson will be hosting a series of workshops and sessions to help #UoR students secure a place in the Civil Service Fast Stream. 

There will be several events in the autumn term all about applying for the Civil Service’s graduate scheme, starting on 4th October all the way to 1st December.

These sessions are as follows:

18th Oct: Fast Stream Civil Service: Skills Workshop, 1pm
26th Oct: Civil Service at the Careers and Placement Fair, 11am-3pm

Kevin told us the aim of this project is “to encourage our students to apply for the Civil Service Fast Stream and to increase the numbers getting through the process”.

We’ve got a range of events coming up in September, covering areas such as finding grad schemes, part-time work, a masterclass on CVs and an introduction to both the RED Award and LinkedIn. On top of all of that we have a rather special event on Wednesday 28th as part of Welcome Week. Reading Experience Day gives you the chance to discover how you can improve yourself and your employability alongside your studies at UoR. Furthermore, the Dome will also be host to the Part-Time Jobs Fair. You can see what employers we have got lined-up for that so far HERE. Make sure you brush up and bring your CV to secure on the 28th!
