BDO LLP is a global accountancy network with more than 1000 offices in over 100 countries. Their offices in Reading are recruiting for two graduates in the Tax Department. This is a great opportunity to gain training and a step on the career ladder from a Times Top 100 Graduate Employer.

BDO are currently recruiting for:

Indirect Tax Graduate

As a new Indirect Tax trainee you can expect to be involved in a wide variety of tasks covering both VAT compliance and VAT advisory. The team would fully support technical and personal development but you would be encouraged to carry out your own research from the outset. You will also work with other staff at all grades both within the Reading team and the wider regional team. You will have regular client contact and would be expected to liaise with Indirect Tax experts throughout the world, as increasingly Indirect Tax problems are international in nature.

The role supports qualification for CTA (Chartered Tax Advisor) as the work is legal and opinion based and involves relatively little accounting. The wide range of client issues that you will be involved in provides an excellent training ground. Historically, BDO’s tax trainees have performed very well in their studies, with pass rates significantly above the national average. Although the numbers of Indirect Tax trainee places are very limited, Southern Indirect Tax Group graduates have won three prizes in CTA or equivalent qualifications in the past 2 years.

A career in indirect tax requires excellent intellectual skills and a strong common sense business approach. An ability with spreadsheets can be advantageous but most important is a good team working ethic and an interest in problem solving. A Indirect Tax career is similar to that in other Taxes, but with a greater emphasis on advisory work from day one. The role of an Indirect Tax trainee is varied and challenging. There is no daily routine. For the future there are roles at all levels in Practice from Junior to Partner, with genuine opportunities to progress on merit. There are also equivalent roles in industry.
To find out more and see how to apply: https://reading.targetconnect.net/open/jobSearch.html?id=10360&pagingPage=0&sortColumn=expireDate&sortDirection=asc&query=BDO&

Reward Tax Graduate

As a new Reward trainee you can expect to be involved in a wide variety of tasks covering advisory work such as assisting with the design and drafting of documentation to implement share plans, employee communications, researching and advising on employee tax issues linked to reward and employee share issues generally. Reward contains a challenging mix of tax, employment/company law and HR issues. The Reading team is a regional hub supporting the whole of BDO’s Southern region and provides advice to our Reading, Bristol and Gatwick offices with close links to the London team. With the current trend towards employee share ownership and rising employment costs the Reward team has seen a real increase in interest from companies looking to implement tax efficient share plans. To continue to grow the team needs high calibre additional resource at trainee level. The team would fully support technical and personal development but you would be encouraged to carry out your own research from the outset. You will also work with other staff at all grades both within the Reading team and the wider regional team. You will have immediate and regular client contact and would be expected to liaise with Reward experts throughout the world, as our location in the Thames Valley means we frequently work with large multinational technology companies who are headquartered in this area.

The role can support qualification for CTA (Chartered Tax Advisor) as the work is largely legal and tax based and involves relatively little accounting. The wide range of client issues that you will be involved in provides an excellent training ground. Historically, BDO’s tax trainees have performed very well in their studies, with pass rates significantly above the national average.

Course: Law

Job: Assistant Tax Advisor, Corporate Tax

Profile:

Having graduated from Reading University Law School I now work as part of the Corporate Tax team at Ernst & Young. During my time at the University I was involved in various facets of student life; including leading the Japanese Society, co-founding the European Law Students’ Association (‘ELSA’) and partaking in multiple Law Society activities. I was also part of the Annual Fundraising Campaign and have assisted in spring-boarding numerous University-wide initiatives.

Tell us about your role?

Corporate Tax at Ernst & Young is a dynamic team of professionals focussed on advising companies on their domestic and international tax affairs. As part of my role I have been exposed to a wide array of projects across multiple departments, ranging from global compliance to international tax restructuring and M&A. The training contract also encompasses both internal and external technical courses, with the view of qualifying as a Chartered Accountant by the end of the programme.

Since day 1 I was encouraged to take charge of my career, gaining exposure to assignments involving a high degree of responsibility. This has allowed me to build a diverse technical portfolio and develop strong relationships with my colleagues. Particularly now, when tax seems to be stealing the headlines in the context of controversy surrounding tax avoidance and the Public Accounts Committee, it is a very exciting time to be a part of the profession.

What is a typical day like for you?

Due to the diverse nature of Corporate Tax work, no two days at EY are ever the same. Generally, I would arrive at the office before 9:00, grab a coffee and catch-up on the latest financial press. Each morning I also make sure to follow my daily client newsfeed and any tax technical updates via the firm’s intranet. After reviewing my inbox I might attend an internal meeting and perhaps make a few phone calls to HMRC concerning compliance issues. Later, I could get involved in a complex group restructuring project with our International Tax Services (‘ITS’) department. I also regularly cooperate with our Business Development and Graduate Recruitment teams, both of which inject my day-day work with extra challenges and variety.

Why did you choose Ernst & Young?

There were a few key criteria I measured my future employer against, most notably: a strong reputation, an international focus and a dynamic/challenging work-environment. Having completed the Summer Internship Programme with EY in 2011, I realised I had found a perfect match. The firm invests a lot of time and resources to ensure our people remain at the top of their respective professions – this fosters an environment with a steep learning curve, promoting growth and celebrating success.

Any words of wisdom for those considering an application to Ernst & Young?

Get involved – participating in university societies/other extra-curricular activities is critical in building the skills you will need to demonstrate throughout the application process. At any stage, preparation is key. Ensure you are familiar with your chosen service line and the specific reasons motivating your decision. If given the chance, definitely attend an Ernst & Young event on campus – it could give you a fantastic opportunity to meet the firm and make a lasting impression!

The UK-China Partners in Education (UKCPIE) Action Plan was signed in October 2011 in a bid to forge stronger links in higher education, vocational education and skills training. The pilot will be “a work placement programme for UK students to provide them with the opportunity to learn about Chinese business, culture and language”. The Ministry of Education approached Business, Innovation & Skills (BIS), the Department for Employment and Learning (DEL NI) and the British Council to establish an internship pilot scheme in Suzhou Industrial Park.

The 2500-year-old tourist city of Suzhou lies in the lower reaches of the Yangtze approximately 50 miles west of Shanghai. It has been officially declared part of “the coastal economic open zone of the Yangtze Delta”. Comprehensive industrial system has taken shape and there has been tremendous expansion in foreign trade and international economic co-operation. Suzhou has currently sister cities in Italy, Canada, Japan and the US.

The prime aim is to provide students with an opportunity to live and work in China for an extended period of time, developing an awareness of the culture and language and gaining invaluable professional skills, knowledge and experience that will enhance their employability within a globally mobile workforce. Such initiatives are welcomed by employers in the UK who are looking for well-rounded trainees with some life experience and an awareness of the world around them.
