Congratulations to CIRCL PhD student Yu-Kuan Chen for passing her viva

Congratulations to CIRCL PhD student Yu-Kuan Chen for passing her viva on 21-01-2013 with her thesis on ‘Objects of Vision: Text, Colour, Gesture’!

External Examiner: Professor Sara Thornton of the University of Paris 7 and Internal Examiner Dr Neil Cocks, supervisor Professor Karin Lesnik-Oberstein.

Yu-Kuan’s thesis is on critical theory and closely considers the implications for vision and reading when they are themselves seen to be subject to vision and seeing. The thesis explores these implications through very close analyses of sections of philosopher David Levin’s Sites of Vision The Discursive Construction of Sight in the History of Philosophy, critical theorist Jacqueline Rose’s The Case of Peter Pan or the Impossibility of Children’s Fiction, philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein’s little-studied, late work Remarks on Colour and disability theorist Rosemarie Garland-Thomson’s book Staring: How We Look.
