Tatooed workman carrying big bag of colourful screwdriversIf you need Arts and Humanities or certain reference resources over the summer, please be prepared to use our ‘fetch and carry’ service.

The University Library’s 5th Floor, and sequential sections of the 3rd Floor, will be closed to Library users when our Rewiring Project resumes to upgrade power and lighting. However, we will fetch any ‘out-of-bounds’ material for you and you will find plenty of space to study on other floors.

When visiting certain Library staff usually on the Ground Floor, you may also find them relocated to the 5th Floor or elsewhere. Occasionally we may need to temporarily close certain staircases for safety reasons, but there will be alternatives and we will re-route Fire Exit access.

We apologise for any inconvenience during these essential works. We’ll keep you up-to-date with changes on this University Library News blog or follow the Library on Twitter.

Dates for your diary

  • 5th Floor (Silent Study) closure  – from 6 June
  • 3rd Floor (Arts and Humanities) sequential partial closures – from 12 June
  • Library Admin Office relocation – from16 July

You will be able to access all areas again by mid-September.

More about the Library Rewiring Project

The University is updating the Library’s electrical provision over a several-year period, phased to minimise disruption to Library users. Last summer an up-to-date power distribution system was installed. Work halted until the Christmas Vacation when better lighting and some additional power and data sockets were installed on the 5th Floor (Silent Study Areas). Basement Reference lighting was also improved.

This summer the 3rd Floor and Ground Floor staff areas will be upgraded, displacing Library staff to the 5th Floor and causing its closure to Library users.

In the near future, further work will upgrade lighting and power on the 4th and 2nd Floors.
