Digimap access fixed!

Recent problems logging into the Screenshot from Geology DigimapDigimap service have now been fixed. However, changes made to the way your Digimap account is managed mean that unfortunately any saved maps or annotations you created between the 26th July and the 23rd August 2016 will have been removed from your account.  Any maps or saved annotations from before the 26th of July will have been reinstated to your account.

If you require access to any saved maps or annotations that you made in the last month that are not now in your account and that you cannot easily recreate, please get in touch with Digimap support at Edina as soon as possible.

Summon – new and improved!

Our Summon Discovery Service has been upgraded, resulting in an improved interface and some new features. Summon allows you to search across the Library’s online collections of journal articles, book chapters, and other publication types. Search it via the Summon search box on the Library homepage.

Summon search results

Results display

  • To see a summary of each item click on the ‘Preview’ link. This will display the abstract, subject keywords and other details of the item in the body of your results, instead of in the right-hand panel.
  • You can cite, email or export details of individual items. This is in addition to being able to add items to your ‘Saved items’ folder to cite, email or export details for multiple references.
  • Definitions from reliable sources, such as Encyclopaedia Britannica, will appear in the right-hand pane. Along with suggested searches you might wish to try.
  • Displays of citation counts from the Web of Science/Scopus and social media interaction indicators from Altmetric have been improved. Use these to help you judge the impact of an item.

Refine options improved

  • It is now possible to exclude items using the refine options on the left of the screen. Just hover over one of the refine options and click on the red cross that appears. This will exclude items in that category from your results. This is in addition to being able to click on an option, to just look at items in that category.
  • Publication date limits have also been improved. Some pre-set options are available, enabling you to easily limit your results to items published in the last 12 months, 3 years, or 5 years. Alernatively, you can use the date slider to select your own custom date range.

Feedback

We hope you find these new features useful. If you have any comments about Summon, please contact Jackie Skinner.

Library Refurbishment: late August / early September

Image of refurbished University Library surrounded by seating, trees and hedges.

Construction work at the Library will continue over the next few weeks, with major tasks focusing on the completion of hoardings and preparations for the demolition of the glassed-in staircase near CaféLibro. Main works proposed up to Sunday 11 September 2016 are:

  • Works will continue in the entrance hall on the Ground Floor, producing a noticeable difference in layout, as hoarding will continue to be erected around some of the pillars and the glass enclosed stairs. The aim is to substantially complete the temporary walls by the 2 September. The IT and Library catalogue PCs have relocated under the main stairs opposite.
  • The set-up of internal hoarding-walls on upper floors (1st, 2nd, 3rd and 5th Floors) will be completed and decorated.
  • On the 2nd Floor, a steel frame will hold a temporary wall by the tall columns near the Information Desk in the group study area. We hope to reopen the 2nd Floor Group Study Area by Friday 2 September. If you wish to use a group study space in the meantime, please use the 4th or Ground Floors instead.
  • Once the 2nd Floor reopens, the 4th Floor Group Study area will be taken out of action and works carried out as on the 2nd Floor. During the 4th Floor closure, please use the reopened Group Study Areas on the 2nd and Ground Floors.
  • Outside the Library, hoardings will be set-up around the new cycle shed area so that ground works can begin. Foundations and ground works will continue around the grass area behind the Library to allow for site offices to be delivered. In addition, a new bin store will be built near to the Chaplaincy.
  • Don’t forget that CaféLibro will remain open for business as usual!

Find more detail in the late August / Early September floor-by-floor outline of works.  Progress over the past month is tracked in our contractor ISG’s helpful August news bulletin, University of Reading Library Refurbishment.

We remind both students and staff not to enter areas cordoned off for work, such as the 2nd Floor group study area for their own safety.

The noisiest phases of work will be carried out each morning up until 10:00.

If you have any queries about the works taking place, please contact Robin Hunter. Additional information about the Library refurbishment can be found at www.reading.ac.uk/library/refurb.

Systems upgrade – just online inter-library loan requests to fix

Computer keyboardWe’ve made more progress with fixing the few remaining issues with the systems upgrade, and it is now possible to login to your online account to view your loans, renew them and place holds.

However, we are still experiencing problems with online inter-library loan requests. If you are a member of staff or a research postgraduate, and you would usually complete an online form to place your request, please print and complete this form and drop it into the Ground Floor Information Desk in the Library. There’s no need to attach a voucher, as we will arrange for payment to be taken from your Department’s inter-library loan account.

Apologies for the inconvenience this will cause.

Upgrading Academic Visitor Library cards

The Library is upgrading the card Academic Visitors have for Library use.Campus_card_associate

In future those who are not members of staff or students but have a close relationship with the University and are sponsored by their department will be able to register their Associate Campus card as their Library card.

All Library privileges will remain the same, only the name will change from Academic Visitor to Associate member.

As well as being able to borrow books the new Associate Campus card can be used as a photocopying card and will enable users to access the Library during Examinations and other restricted periods.  The Associate Campus card also gives members greater flexibility in managing their Library account with the ability to pay fines online.

If you already have an Associate Campus card it can be used to replace an exisiting Academic Visitor Library card.  If you do not already have one and you are already a Library member it will be provided for you from the Ground Floor Information Desk on request.

Full details about the Associate Campus card can be found on the University’s Campus card webpage.

For full details of Library membership for Associates please see our membership webpage.

Library Refurbishment works 15-21 August

Revised impression of the refurbished University Library

Early works for the Library refurbishment continue over the course of the week 15-21 August. Following on from last week, the majority of activity will focus on the erection of hoardings inside and outside the Library, and preparations for the demolition of the glassed-in staircase near CaféLibro.

  • External hoardings continue to be set up around the outside of the Library, and are due to be complete by September.
  • Inside the Library, internal hoardings continue to be set up between the Ground and 4th Floors.
  • CafeLibro remains open for business as usual despite a few noticeable changes to the café area. Hoardings will be erected within the café, and the vending machines and fridges have been moved alongside the café windows.
  • The 2nd Floor group study area remains closed so that hoarding can be erected. Please use group study space on the 4th or Ground Floors.
  • On the Ground floor, hoarding is going up in the entrance hall, around the closed, glass-enclosed stairs, ready for its demolition. The IT and Library catalogue PCs have relocated under the main stairs opposite.

Students and staff are reminded not to enter areas cordoned off for work, such as the 2nd Floor group study area, for their own safety.

The noisiest phases of work will be carried out each morning up until 10:00am.

Contact Library Facilities Manager, Robin Hunter, if you have any queries about the works taking place.

Systems upgrade next week – some services unavailable

Sam Tyler grins whilst holding travel mug up to the camera

Systems Manager, Sam Tyler, will be celebrating with a bevy in a branded Library travel mug once the new Library systems server is installed in August

If you are planning to use the Library next week (15-19 August) please be aware that some services will be unavailable whilst we upgrade our Library Management System server. In particular, if you wish to borrow from the Library on Monday 15 August, please issue your books before 4.45pm as the server will be shut down promptly at 5pm.

The Library will still be open but there are a few things you won’t be able to do.

You won’t…

  • Be able to see the current location of an item. So you won’t be able to tell if it has been borrowed. However, you will still be able to see the Call Number, so you can always check the shelf anyway as it might be there, and at the same time browse other books on the same topic.
  • Be able to access your online Library account to renew your loans or pay fines.
  • Get any email reminders of when your books are due. So have a quick check before the 15th in case any of them need returning or renewing.
  • Be able to request items from Closed Access or the Off-site Store.
  • Be able to register with the Library. This includes SCONUL Access registrations.

You will…

  • Still be able to search the Library catalogue, Enterprise.
  • Still have access to all our online resources – so any e-books or e-journals you find on the catalogue will still be available via the ‘Click here to access’ links.
  • Be able to borrow, return and renew items in the Library.
  • Be able to ask any questions at Library Information Desks.
  • Be able to pay fines in person in the Library.

Library Refurbishment: works up to 14 August

Image of refurbished University Library surrounded by seating, trees and hedges.

Impression of the refurbished University Library.

Early works for the Library refurbishment will continue to take place over the next few weeks. The majority of activity will focus on preparing the southern (glassed in) staircase for demolition and continuing the erection of external hoardings. Access to Library services, support and resources will be maintained throughout.

Notable works leading up to Sunday 14 August are:

Week 1 (from 1 August): Work began around Cafe Libro to ensure that the café can continue to operate during the works. A new store was created and hoardings were installed to separate the café from the works, ensuring that you can still get your coffee! The vending machines have also been relocated. Work around the southern (glassed in) staircase continued across most floors in preparation for its demolition– this involved hoardings being set up around the stair core and a small amount of furniture being moved. The 20 bike hoops within the Library undercroft have been relocated to the URS undercroft within the gravel area next to existing bike hoops.

Week 2 (from 8 August): Preparations for the demolition of the southern staircase will continue across all floors– hoardings will be erected and a small amount of furniture will be moved out. Elsewhere, former staff offices on the Ground floor will be stripped out, and temporary power and water supplies will be added to the contractor’s temporary accommodation.

External hoarding will continue to be put up around the Library. This will surround the bike racks in the undercroft- so they have been temporarily relocated next to the bike hoops by the URS Building for the time being. The main bike racks to the front of the building will stay in operation until next year.

A floor-by-floor view is available for additional information.

For more information about the project, see our Library Refurbishment Project webpage or for day-to-day information, contact the Library’s Facilities Manager, Robin Hunter.

Amy Rippon, Trainee Liaison Librarian

Ground Floor Group Study Pods unavailable

From Monday 8 August the Group Study Pods on the Ground Floor of the Library will become permanently unavailable as part of the Library Refurbishment Project. Alternative Group Study Pods can currently be found on the 4th Floor and the Group Study Rooms on the Ground Floor remain available. The microfilm and microfiche readers on the Ground Floor of the Library will also be unavailable.

You may have spotted that areas of the Library are cordoned off to allow for building works to commence. These are clearly marked by signage, hazard tape or barriers. Please do not enter any restricted areas as these are now dangerous construction zones. If you need any assistance please speak to staff on the Information Desks.

For more information about the project, see our Library Refurbishment Project webpage or contact the Library’s Facilities Manager, Robin Hunter.

Systems upgrade 15-19 August – some services unavailable

Sam Tyler grins whilst holding travel mug up to the camera

Systems Manager, Sam Tyler, will be celebrating with a bevy in a branded Library travel mug once the new Library systems server is installed in August

This summer we are moving our Library Management System to a new server to give us a more robust, reliable system. During this switch, 15-19 August, there will be some disruption to Library services. The Library will still be open but there are a few things you won’t be able to do.
