Silent Study area on Library's 5th FloorRediscovered the reopened Library’s 5th Floor Silent Study zone? Its lighting has been upgraded with more energy efficient units, improving the green credentials of the building. Lights automatically switch off if no movement is detected. (Just wave your arm if they turn off because you sit really still when you are working). You can get WiFi for your laptops.  There are additional power sockets in Rooms 500, 501, 502 and 508 and in the near future, data plug-in places.

You may now consult 5th Floor reference material yourself again.

Rewiring Project to be continued

The 5th Floor improvements were part of the University’s long-term Library Rewiring Project 2011-2014. We installed a new power distribution system last year and will rewire the Library floor by floor. The next phase begins after the exam period when the 5th Floor will again be closed to Library users.

What has the University Library done for students lately? Here’s an update showing what we did over the last year.

Library study space and technology

  • Created more study spaces on the Ground, 2nd, 3rd and 5th Floors, including the new Group Study Pods.
  • Added four plasma screens to Group Study areas – just plug in your laptop.
  • Installed Smartboards to training rooms - try them out yourselves when the rooms are not booked.
  • Reserved the whole 5th Floor for Silent Study

Rewiring the Library

After installing up-to-date power distribution last summer, we’ll rewire each floor over the next few years. The 5th Floor is currently getting new lighting, data and power plug sockets. Work continues after the revision season.

New Off-site Store allows stock moves

Our Collections Project will continue to provide further improvments over the next few years.

Library home for Study Advice & Maths Support

Student talking to Study Adviser Michelle ReidWe built Study Advice a new, permanent home by the University’s largest PC area and IT Help counter. Increased use shows how much easier it is to find and use the service in the Library.

WorkmanThis January the next phase of the Library’s long-term Rewiring Project begins on the 5th Floor. The Silent Study areas on this floor must be closed to Library users whilst the work is carried out. However, when it re-opens, the lighting will have been upgraded with more energy efficient units so improving the green credentials of the building, and you’ll have additional power and data plug-in places in Rooms 500, 501, 502 and 508.

To help compensate for the temporary loss of 5th Floor Silent Study areas, the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Floors will keep all available study areas as individual quiet study areas. There will be an area designated for silent study on the 3rd Floor.

During the works a small public section of the Basement will also be closed temporarily.

Every effort will be made to minimize the disruption caused by this critical upgrade to the wiring of the building. Once the works on the 5th Floor have been completed, the Rewiring Project will be halted until after the June 2012 Examination Period. It will then resume over the Summer Vacation on one subject floor and in Ground Floor Staff Areas.
