Student Volunteers needed for Reading Science Week, 9th – 17th March 2012

Organised by the British Science Association, Reading Science Week is an opportunity for people to come together to celebrate science, engineering and technology with a range of fantastic events.

As in previous years, they are looking for student volunteers to help out with the delivery of these events, including (amongst others):

  • Star gazing
  • Science busking
  • Meet Mother Nature at the Museum of English Rural Life

Further details about these events (including times and locations) and the week in general can be found here: http://www.britishscienceassociation.org/web/RegionsandBranches/BranchActivityInYourArea/SouthofEngland/Thames+Valley/

Students would have to commit to volunteering at a minimum of two events during the week, with most of the events approximately 4-5 hours in length. Exact timings will be confirmed with plenty of advance warning! There may also be a requirement to undertake training for some of the events, which will be on the evening before that particular event is due to take place and will be no more than 2 hours.

Student volunteers will be involved with science communication, helping members of the public to experience science. This will involve explaining and demonstrating science, as well as assisting people to ‘do’ science themselves. Full briefings will be given prior to the events. Students may also be involved in a range of event management tasks such as welcoming visitors, distributing refreshments and dealing with enquiries.

Volunteers will need to be enthusiastic about science, be outgoing and friendly, and have a willingness to help people.

If you would like to volunteer, please email Lucy Wallace at lu.wallace@yahoo.co.uk stating your course title, year of study and a brief paragraph on why you are interested in helping.

This is a fantastic opportunity to gain key employability skills in areas such as communication, presentation, team working and project management, which will look great on any CV for the future. The experience could also be used by current students to count towards the University’s RED Award: http://www.reading.ac.uk/internal/readingexperienceanddevelopmentaward/reda-home.aspx
