New Year, New Image

Happy new year to you all. As is customary ITNG have updated the image in the labs. This should lead to a better computing experience. We have pushed updates and several bug fixes, including issues with Solidworks’ Simulation .

On the Linux image we have a couple of changes, Chrome has been added and there is now support for the Ex-fat file system.

Tonight (from 6pm) in addition to rebooting a number of the windows servers to apply some updates, we will be make a change to the policy’s we apply to windows laptops and re-organising some of the printer queues.

LAPTOPS

We are going to change the policy that controls the Windows Firewall. The change is going to re-enable the default settings for Home, Private and Public networks. What this means is that when windows detects or is told that it is connected to a public or home network, it will switch the firewall on and stop any incoming traffic. All out-bound traffic will be allowed and the user can manually configure what incoming traffic the laptop will accept. When windows detects it is connected to the domain network (134.225.206-8.x) it will disable the firewall.

Printing

In order to simplify printing in the school,  we will be removing the two print queues called;

Photocopiers(BW) and Photocopiers(Colour)

And replacing them with a single printer called;

Photocopiers

This printer is a Printer Release Queue (for details see http://wiki.sse.reading.ac.uk/wiki/ITNG:Printer_Release_Queues) but the quick version is that when you print to this printer, you then need to go to the photocopier, login, and release the print jobs. You can release the print job remotely via the web or using a phone (see link for details).

To print colour you will need to release the print jobs to 165cp, 151cp or sseG47cp.

We will also be tidying up the z:\printers folder and sorting the printer shortcuts into logical groupings.

Please note: this will all happen automatically, you don’t need to do anything.

Cheers

ITNG

Cry Engine 3

Hi Folks,

I saw some news which may be of interest to anyone who is using or interested in using a 3d engine for anything.  Cry Engine 3 has been released for non-commercial projects for nothing.  Cry Engine 3 has been used for some of the most visually stunning games of the last few years, including Crysis.

The download is available from :

http://mycryengine.com/

For some examples of what can be done with Cry Engine 3 see:

I hope that this is of some interest.
