Photocopier

Tonight (from 6pm) in addition to rebooting a number of the windows servers to apply some updates, we will be make a change to the policy’s we apply to windows laptops and re-organising some of the printer queues.

LAPTOPS

We are going to change the policy that controls the Windows Firewall. The change is going to re-enable the default settings for Home, Private and Public networks. What this means is that when windows detects or is told that it is connected to a public or home network, it will switch the firewall on and stop any incoming traffic. All out-bound traffic will be allowed and the user can manually configure what incoming traffic the laptop will accept. When windows detects it is connected to the domain network (134.225.206-8.x) it will disable the firewall.

Printing

In order to simplify printing in the school,  we will be removing the two print queues called;

Photocopiers(BW) and Photocopiers(Colour)

And replacing them with a single printer called;

Photocopiers

This printer is a Printer Release Queue (for details see http://wiki.sse.reading.ac.uk/wiki/ITNG:Printer_Release_Queues) but the quick version is that when you print to this printer, you then need to go to the photocopier, login, and release the print jobs. You can release the print job remotely via the web or using a phone (see link for details).

To print colour you will need to release the print jobs to 165cp, 151cp or sseG47cp.

We will also be tidying up the z:\printers folder and sorting the printer shortcuts into logical groupings.

Please note: this will all happen automatically, you don’t need to do anything.

Cheers

Photocopier in 165

The photocopier in 165 is going to be setup this afternoon to require a login or access card.

This will enable the photocopying to be tracked by user.

For more information and videos on how to login and how to register your access card see

http://wiki.sse.reading.ac.uk/wiki/ITNG:Photocopiers

The photocopier in 165 is now set up to require authentication.

There are also two new printer queues “Photocopier (Colour)” and “Photocopier (BW)” which you can use with the photocopier instead of 165cp. The difference is that jobs sent to these queues will not print until you release them when you are logged onto the photocopier.

You can find windows shortcuts to these printers in the folder “z:\printers\Printer Hold Queues”

In order to help you keep track of your printing and photocopying we will be pushing out the papercut client to windows desktops in the domain shortly.
