Telephone scam targets international students

We have received reports from some UK universities that a telephone fraud is targeting international students. Typically, a student will receive a call from someone who says they work for the UK Border Agency, giving their name. The names “Eric Wilson”, “Mike Watson” and others have been given. The caller may appear genuine, and may have some limited information about you, for example your passport number. The caller may explain that there is a problem with your pending immigration application or with your current visa, and they may try to persuade you to pay a fine immediately to prevent further action or investigation by UKBA.

UKBA would not approach an applicant or migrant in this way, nor is there any system of fines. If you receive such a call, we advise as follows:

  • Do not give the caller any personal information, or confirm that any information they have is correct. Do not make any payment over the phone
  • Ask the caller for their name, job title and number (although these are likely to be false). Say you will ring them back, but do not ring them back.
  • Report the call to your international student adviser, who can report the fraud to the police and to UKBA if you wish
  • If you wish, you can report the matter to the police or to UKBA yourself.

For details on how to contact the Internaitonal Student Adviser, and for other information aimed at international students please visit the International Student webpages.
