Have you found a summer internship or placement year yet? As we speak, big names such as Morgan Stanley, Amazon and Goldman Sachs are vetting their final lucky candidates (which you may be one of) whilst other companies are only just beginning to advertise their internship opportunities.
Organisations currently targeting Reading students and advertising their vacancies on the Careers, Placement and Experience Centre’s jobs board include top names such Virgin Media, Panasonic, The House of Commons, NHS, The Met Office, Accenture, KPMG and The Walt Disney Company and this is just for starters. All you need to do is go online and apply!
According to a High Fliers survey in 2013, the total number of graduate job applications by university-leavers is a staggering 75% higher than it was five years ago, and research strongly indicates that students who have gained work experience are far more likely to get hired – so applying for an internship or placement ASAP really is a no brainer for any student!
How do I get started?
All of our programmes now offer a placement option which is embedded into the programme. These options include placements which are part of a module, a whole module or an entire year, so speak to your department and find out which option your programme currently offers.
You can also choose to do an extracurricular internship with an employer, charity or voluntary groups and also as part of a University organised scheme which include:
- Undergraduate Research opportunities Programme (UROP)
- Reading Internship Scheme (RIS)
- Student Tutoring
As well as talking to your own school or department, you can also come and talk to a central placement officer in CPEC about getting further support to help you find and secure your internship or placement.
You can also get ahead in prepping for your placement by attending our careers workshops, run by employers and careers professionals.
