Introducing evolution – New curriculum for Year 6

A new National Curriculum is coming into action, and for the first time this includes a section teaching Evolution to Year 6. This places teachers in an interesting position – they are now teaching their students information they were not taught when they were their students’ age!

This is where we come in!

We are here to help teachers get a sound understanding of evolution and all that goes with it, as well as having free-to-use resources and activities that they can use to assist them in teaching evolution to their students.

The statutory National Curriculum states that under the ‘Evolution and Inheritance’ module pupils should be taught to:

  • Recognise that living things have changed over time and that fossils provide information about living things that inhabited the Earth millions of years ago.
  • Recognise that living things produce offspring of the same kind, but normally offspring vary and are not identical to their parents.
  • Identify how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and that adaptation may lead to evolution.

More information on the notes released can be found HERE.

FREE CPD

In these free CPD workshops specifically designed for primary school teachers, participants will use activity-based, reflective methods to:

  • identify with the help of the curriculum what children are expected to be taught
  • consider potential concerns about teaching evolution, and how such concerns can be addressed,
  • try out some age-appropriate activities to generate interest and promote understanding of the key ideas including adaptation and natural selection.
  • Look at selected free resources for use in class and at home,
  • Network, share ideas and discuss questions informally (refreshments provided).

CHILDREN WITH QUESTIONS? SEND THEM TO US!!

Did you know, we will be running a ‘zone’ with the I’m a Scientist Site – especially for Year 6 children where they can put their questions to scientists about evolution.
