TSBE Centre host IDC Administrators Meeting 13 Feb 2013

The TSBE Centre hosted the latest IDC Administrators meeting yesterday. Representatives from IDC and similar Centres from across the UK attended the meeting, together with Paul Wilkinson from the AEngD. The meeting was organised by TSBE Administrator Emma Hawkins. Emma commented that ‘these meetings are an excellent way to meet colleagues in similar jobs across the IDC network and share best practice’.

A mixture of formal agenda and informal discussion items made for an interesting and informative session. The working group covered news and updates from the Centres, Jenny Berger TSBE Centre Manager reported that ‘the last few months had been exciting times for TSBE Centre research’ and informed the meeting of student impact: Rosario Nobile and Matilda’s Planet have installed a vertical wind turbine on the Vauxhall Tower; Michele Aghahossein with Halcrow has developed a series of interactive posters; Dan Williams has designed an app currently being used by his sponsor company Microsoft; one RE has a patent pending but no details could be released; a student had been invited to speak at an EU project meeting and outreach programmes were running well.

Director Janet Barlow had given a Public lecture, students had represented TSBE Centre at community events, Research Engineer Stacey Waring was very active on behalf of her project and the BCT, giving talks across the UK and the Nuffield student mentored by Stacey had reached the finals of the Big Bang Science Fair.

The Centre had also just heard that three of their researchers had have been shortlisted for the highly competitive SET for Britain poster competition. The national competition picks research projects that represent the very best research work in the fields of Engineering, Biological and Biomedical Science, and Physical Sciences.

The next meeting will be hosted by IDC in Machining Science Centre, hosted by the Manager Dr Andrea Haworth, a.haworth@sheffield.ac.uk.
