About the Department

The Department of Typography & Graphic Communication is the leading centre for research and teaching in all aspects of design for reading, encompassing information design, typeface design, book design, and all kinds of user-centred communication design. We work in both print and online media, believing that the fundamentals of clear and appropriate visual communication are universally applicable. Our teaching is based on a blend of history, theory, and practice. We have particular strengths in applying our research in the production of non-Latin typefaces and all aspects of information design, and much of our research and teaching draws on the unparalleled collections that we and the University hold.

Our close connection with the University’s Design & Print Studio enhances our students’ experience of the professional world, and Department staff were major contributors to the University’s visual identity.

We are proud to have won a 2011 Queen’s Anniversary Prize  for the University of Reading. Our submission, ‘Design for reading: teaching and research in typography and graphic communication’, was awarded the Prize in recognition of the excellence and world-wide reputation of our research and teaching and learning.
