The BIG Garden Bird Watch … On campus

Hi fellow naturalists

I carried out the big garden bird watch at the weekend next to the lake. There were an interesting variety of species, on what was a cold and dull day

The birds seen at any one time were:

25 x Mallard, 3 x Robin, 4 x Canadian Geese, 8 x Moorhen, 2 x Coot, 80 x Black Headed Gull, 1 x Blackbird, 2 x Mandarin Duck, 3 x Bluetit, 35 x Redwing, 51 x Woodpigeon, 1 x Great tit, 8 x Long tailed tit, 1 x Jay, 2 x Cormorant, 1 x Song Thrush, 1 x Goldfinch, 12 x Siskin, 2 x Great Crested Grebe, 3 x Pochard, 8 x Shoveler, 2 x Egyptian Geese

  1. Thanks for posting the list Justin. I’m surprised you didn’t see the heron which seems permanently installed in the middle section of the lake by the upper earth dam. Having said that – a really amazing list of species- good work!

  2. Spring is making a wider variety of birds evident now. As I walked in this morning two very raucous jays flew over. Lots of the smaller birds are singing – I wish I recognised more by their song.
