Day 1 – Campus Woodland

Hello!

My frist data collection trip was undertaken yesterday on the 12 acre campus woodland behind the Harbourne building, and I managed to identify 19 different species, which isn’t too bad for a first effort! 13 species I managed to identify whilst walking. including an amazing Sparrowhawk nest complete with adult and Juvenile bird, and 6 species were identified from the recordings and bird song CD at home. One thing I can say, is that campus has a thriving Woodpigeon community!

In alphabetical order, the birds which were identified yesterday were:

  • Blackbird (Turdus merula)
  • Blue Tit (Parus caeruleus)
  • Carrion Crow (Corvus corone corone)
  • Chaffinch (Fringilla coelebs)
  • Coal Tit (Parus ater)
  • Collared Dove (Streptopelia decaocto)
  • Dunnock (Prunella modularis)
  • Great Tit (Parus major)
  • Green Woodpecker (Picus viridis)
  • House Sparrow (Passer domesticus)
  • Jackdaw (Corvus monedula)
  • Jay (Garrulus glandarius)
  • Magpie (Pica pica)
  • Nuthatch (Sitta europaea)
  • Red Kite (Milvus milvus)
  • Robin (Erithacus rubecula)
  • Sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus)
  • Woodpigeon (Columba palumbus)
  • Wren (Troglodytes troglodytes)

If there is any that anyone else spots in the campus woodland, please let me know!
