15 Responses to Flowering plants (Angiospermae)

  1. Dr M says:

Great to see this here, who compiled this and when? Would be good to have another look and get it updated where appropriate, some of these species haven’t been seen for a while and maybe a few new ones have appeared recently. A great topic for a student project?!

  2. This list is based on the updated list Le Grice and Jury prepared plus observations during the 2013 Bioblitz, my own observations and work by a student this year – Billy Lumley. I’d welcome new records and hope the new KiteSite app will help add to the list and provided dated records.

  3. Fay Newbery says:

Found Heath speedwell (Veronica officinalis) on campus today. In the woodland near Earley Gate. It was growing in association with a couple of heathland mosses.

  4. Fay, thanks for that – I have added it in.

  5. Dr M says:

As I said above, nice list, will do some checking but 3 queries for starters: 1. I think Sanguisorba minor is more likely ssp muricata (as planted in meadow mix), 2. where is Zannichellia? Wd like to use it for classes! 3. Ditto for Potomogeton spp.

  6. Sanguisorba minor on campus pre-dates the meadow mix plantings so we have native material. The water plants used to be in the top lake but were lost when large fish were introduced for angling. The fish have been removed now (I think) so we should see reappearance with any luck. The top lake used to be densely weeded.

  7. David Morris says:

Zannichellia palustris is growing on the eastern side of the lake, a few metres south of the white footbridge at the southern end. If I remember correctly, there’s a big willow in the corner by the bridge and next to it a fenced off area which can be reached from the path – below this is Zannichellia. Potamogeton natans is also growing there. I can show you if you like. There are a lot of nice water plants growing at the margin of that end of the lake.

I’ve been botanising on my breaks from the herbarium and have a growing list of plants I’ve found growing naturally or apparently naturally on campus (300+). There were some really lovely patches of weeds around some of the halls to the east that turned up lots of aliens, but they’ve all been mown. You’re welcome to regular updates and I’d happily help with the blog.

  8. David Morris says:

The fallow ground at the far end of the glasshouse complex near the gate into the Harris garden also has some nice weeds (e.g. Mentha pulegium, Filago minima). The area is apparently ear-marked to be built over.

  9. David Morris says:

Jolly good. I don’t have a fancy phone that enables me to do such things, but here are some additions.

    Acaena nova-zelandie (wilderness)
Ammi majus (escape from seed mix)
    Astragalus glycyphyllos
    Barbarea vulgaris
    Carduus nutans
Chenopodium bonus-henricus (the gardeners put the mower over it before I could have a second look to make sure)
    Cirsium palustre (wilderness)
Coreopsis tinctoria (escape from seed mix)
    Cotoneaster franchetii
    Echinochloa crusgalli (Bridges Hall)
Erigeron acris (verge by Harborne car park)
    Euphorbia oblongata
    Filago minima (Harris gardens greenhouses)
Filago vulgaris (in front of RSSL building)
    Gunnera tinctoria (the grotto)
Helleborus foetidus (by one of the entrances on Whiteknights road, I forget which)
    Juncus x surrejanus (I think)
Linaria marocanna (escape from seed mix)
    Lepidium coronopus
    Luzula sylvatica (wilderness)
    Mentha pulegium (Harris gardens greenhouses)
    Mycelis muralis
    Nicotiana forgetiana
    Orobanche minor
    Parietaria judaica
    Petunia x hybrida
    Populus alba
    Portulaca oleracea (Harris gardens greenhouses)
    Prunus spinosa
    Pterocarya fraxinifolia
    Rhamnus cathartica
Senecio aquaticus (based on its basal leaves – needs confirming)
Thalictrum aquiligiifolium (self-seeded from a flower bed)
Trifolium arvense (e.g. in front of Hopkins building)
    Veronica scutellata

Renee Grayer told me that plants at the old locality for Solanum vernei on campus had been destroyed, but I found a plant near the Mathematics building earlier this week.

The list has a couple of duplicates due to name changes, Picris echiodes = Helminthotheca echioides, and Festuca subgen. Schedonorus = Schedonorus (so giant and tall fescues appear twice) being ones I picked up on. There are also some non-flowering plants on the list, vis ferns and horsetails, and I have a few additions of woodland ferns found in the Wilderness.

    Polystichum aculeatum
    Polystichum setiferum
    Athyrium felix-femina

    • Thank you David! I can see that I’m due an update session on the species lists – I did a lot of de-duplication when I brought the various lists together and am not surprised I missed a few things.

  10. I’ve started editing the lists to add your species and have been stimulated to split out the ferns and horsetails at last – a new page is now published for them. I’ll work through the rest of your updates over the weekend.

  11. David Morris says:

I have a new, quite rare, plant for the list, Anagallis arvensis subsp. foemina (Mill.) Schinz & Thell. ex Schinz & R.Keller. A pretty little thing growing under the shrubbery near the car park barrier behind the RSSL building amongst lots of subsp. arvensis.

  12. David Morris says:

I decided I ought to look up the taxonomy of Anagallis arvensis subsp. foemina and discovered I’d been somewhat precipitate with my identification. To my disappointment and embarrassment, the plants are merely a blue flowered form of Anagallis arvensis subsp.arvensis, called forma azurea. The true subsp. foemina (according to Wikipedia, recently given specific rank in Lysimachia I now find) has very few, almost no, glandular hairs on the margins of the petals compared with the abundant glandular hairs in subsp. arvensis.

On my way home from checking the pimpernels, I did find a genuinely new species for the list, Nicandra physaloides (L.) Gaertn. Several plants are growing on a patch of exposed ground by the road, next the wire fence of the building work going on near the glasshouses, the flowers standing out against all the persicarias.
