Online Exams: On-going browser issue affecting some Turnitin submissions

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

With the approach of the Semester 1 Assessment period, we are keen to ensure students who need to use Turnitin for their online exam have checked and updated their browser settings ahead of taking their exam.

Please could you highlight to relevant students that they can:

  1. Test submitting to Turnitin in their Online Exam Practice Area using the computer and browser they intend to use for the exam.
  2. Fix the ‘Invalid or missing state’ error messageby editing the settings in their browser, following the steps at: How to fix Turnitin error message ‘Invalid or missing state’.
  3. Contact TEL via DTS@reading.ac.ukif they need help to fix the issue.

Only some students are affected by this issue and it’s not possible to identify who they are, but Mac and Safari browser users are most likely to encounter this issue.

We are actively trying to resolve and mitigate this. We are working with the supplier, Turnitin, and sending out communications to students on the Blackboard Home page and via MCE’s student communication channels.

Forthcoming systems’ maintenance

Please also be aware that Blackboard, Turnitin and Gradescope planned maintenance is taking place on Saturday 18th January 2025 and the systems will be unavailable for short periods of time:

  • 16:00 – 20:00– Turnitin and Gradescope will be unavailable with essential maintenance updates being applied.
  • 23:00 – 23:30– Blackboard will be unavailable as additional server capacity is being added in preparation for the Online Exams, and this will also affect YuJa access.
