There are many good reasons why you should attend the Careers and Placements Fair in 2018
Written by Claire Mack, Careers Consultant
The Careers and Placements Fair is a great opportunity to make some really good headway with your career planning in a very short space of time – think about all those employers under one roof!
If you know what you want to do, by coming to the Careers Fair you get to research employers, explore graduate schemes and placements on offer and also to meet the recruiters in person, chat with them and gain insights into their company’s recruitment process. If you don’t know what you want to do, it’s a great opportunity to find out what’s out there for Reading grads, regardless of what degree they are studying.
There will be an opportunity to network and find out what the different types of schemes are about, what employers are looking for and to talk to recruiters to get some top tips on how to do well in applications and interviews. You will also discover which employers are looking for your degree and get the inside track from graduates who have recently joined the organisation. You also get a chance to practice your interview technique by talking to recruiters and make wider connections with other contacts who may be able to offer advice.
Remember to bring your laptop, phone, notepad or all three, where you can take notes and jot down employers’ contact details. You will need those to follow up with them, send your applications or just to grow your database of contacts. You can also get their names, look them up on LinkedIn and connect with them. A lot of professionals are very active on this network, so if you don’t have an account already, we suggest you create one soon. We also recommend this article written by one of our Careers Consultants at Reading on how to connect with the world’s largest community of professionals. Once you’ve added your experience and professional objectives, make sure you add all the Fair contacts to your network.
For more help with LinkedIn and top tips on how to use this social network, keep on eye on our events as we’ll be organising LinkedIn-specific sessions.
We wish you the best of luck at this amazing event. We’re really excited and hope you are too!
