Social Impact Careers

Make your mark on the community

Social Impact Careers is the first of the 3 themed-weeks series focusing on specific job sectors, organised by Careers at the University of Reading.

Taking place between 29 October and 2 November, this initiative is packed with events, workshops and resources relevant to those aiming to work in the charity sector. We’ll be running a range of introductory workshops which will give you an idea of the different kinds of roles available, where to look for opportunities, and how to give yourself the best chance of securing a role.

We interviewed a few people who were involved in this sector and asked them to tell us more about the sector, their personal journey and how working with charities has helped them develop.

Steve Hendry, Reading Voluntary Action Development Manager, speaks about the different kinds of charities, the support offered by RVA to different charities and volunteer recruitment. According to him, someone looking to work in this sector needs a range of qualities, as most charities are looking for flexible and multi-skilled candidates.

Catherine and Raj, both University of Reading students now in their final year, have worked for charities in the Reading area. They secured their roles through the University’s Reading Internship Scheme. During their time at RVA and Ethical Reading, respectively, they planned and implemented projects independently, which helped them to develop professionally.
