- Provide advance organisers – for example, outline what the clip/presentation will cover; or what learners should focus on
Below we show two versions of the same video content – unenhanced (no advance organisers) and enhanced (with advance organisers). All figures are adapted screenshots from University of Reading’s Understanding Anxiety, Depression and CBT on FutureLearn.
Figure 1 is the unenhanced version. It consists of a talking head (Professor Shirley Reynolds) with the option of reading a transcript of what she is saying.
Figures 2 & 3 feature the enhanced version of the same material. As in Figure 1, the transcript is provided. However, other support measures have been added, notably:
- Advance Organisers. This is a term for signposts given to students before they undertake an activity where they have to process incoming information. These signposts help them structure the information they are about to learn and to direct their attention to key points. In this example the Advance Organisers highlight what the clip covers.
- The transcript then follows this up by using boxes to draw attention to key learning points (Figure 3) .

There is also an option for captions by selecting these in the playback settings in YouTube, and there is a Deaf BSL Signer translating the clip – see Figure 2.
