The Department of English is heavily involved in the university event ‘Dickens in December’, with the following events:
Tuesday 11 December, 8pm (Palmer G10, Whiteknights Campus): Screening of Scrooge, the Alastair Sim version, introduced by Dr Pete Orford from the Shakespeare Institute.
Wednesday 12 December, 8pm (Palmer G10, Whiteknights Campus): Andrew Mangham’s Public Lecture, ‘The Charles Dickens Phenomenon: Dickensian Values in the 21st Century’.
Monday 17 December, 4pm (Palmer Building, Whiteknights Campus): Neil Cocks’s Children’s Christmas Lecture, ‘Mystery and Monsters: Exploring the Power of Charles Dickens’s Creative Writing’
Wednesday 19 December, 7pm (Great Expectations Hotel, 33 London Street, Reading): Public Reading from A Christmas Carol – recreating a reading by Dickens in the same building on 19 December 1854.
