At the beginning of my second term in my first year at the University of Reading, I gathered a group of friends to help me build an independent magazine, called The New Frontier, that aimed to advertise everything on campus and that would help to provide students with a way to gain experience in a semi-professional environment.
At the time, I was trying to submit poetry to online magazines but for the up-and-coming generation, it is very difficult to get even one piece of creative writing published. This led to our idea of having a creativity section, in order for anyone to show the world their creativity.
We approached the English Literature Department for help and they were so enthusiastic. With a lot of work, the magazine is now up and running, with a big launch event coming soon.
Many people ask me how I set up The New Frontier. The truth is, I had never run anything so large before or taken a leadership role. I had no clue what I was doing! All I knew was that my determination for the project to work would drive me far enough to make it work, and it did.
Now that we’re ready to roll, we welcome all sorts –creative writing, art, or photography. We welcome journalists, and people who want to know how it all works backstage. We welcome photographers at every event we review.
We’re a friendly and welcoming bunch, always ready to help people out, especially those in their first year.
