A short post to show you what came up in the sunken-featured building today, found by Ben and excavated by Cordelia, Ben and myself. I’ll do a longer post very soon, but we wanted you to see this beautiful bone comb right away.
Our exciting find of the day, a triangular composite bone comb from the 5th century AD
This style of triangular comb is understood to be very early, probably the 5th century AD, and is made up of three parts, with the teeth sandwiched between plates held together with iron rivets and decorated with a ring and dot pattern. We are very lucky to have even a few of the teeth remaining. It will need cleaning and conserving – this picture is fresh out of the ground!
Find of the day indeed! How fascinating. So interesting to see things slowly (or quickly!) come to light. The odd photo of the blogger herself wouldn’t come amiss!
