Here we go again!

Monday was such a busy day that I seem to have erased all details from my mind! But I do know that we have some great additions to our team this week – not just our 2nd tranche of Reading students, but also some great characters from other walks of life, come to spend a week or two with us. Notably Karen Gallacher – Happy Birthday Karen! 3 days at Silchester were bought for her as a birthday gift…..But also a real mix of people of all ages and backgrounds, which is one of the reasons I believe excavations are such a unique environment.

It was another hugely hot day – I have reorganised the working hours so that we have a longer afternoon tea break and finish half an hour earlier. Those dying afternoon hours are the real killers heatwise – and I did notice today that our newcomers struggled particularly out in the full glare of the day. At one point the shade around the edges of the kabins was populated by large numbers of prostrate bodies…..and the hosepipe was being put to good use to cool people down. However 50 newcomers were successfully introduced to archaeology and Week 3 is now underway!
