Abelmoschus esculentus – Okra

Okra is a member of the Malvaceae along with cotton and Hibiscus.  It is grown as an annual crop from which the unripe fruit are harvested.

The origin of okra is somewhat obscure and it may be a cultigen selected from less productive wild species or a hybrid of them.  The fruit are high in dietary fibre and vitamin C and the mucilage acts as a useful thickening agent in curries and gumbo amongst others.

Our plants are the purple podded variety and seem to be very attractive to a range of pests, especially mealy bug.

Continued mealy bug infestation has taken it’s toll on the Okra plants
