Colocasia esculenta – Taro

Taro is a starch crop with stem tubers that forms impressive ‘elephant ear’ leaves.  It is readily recognisable as a member of the Araceae based on growth form and leaf venation.

Originating in the Malaysian region it has been in cultivation since at least 5000BC, spreading to India then Africa.  The tubers are readily transported and grow rapidly once planted.
