TSBE Centre Hosts National Grid Energy Seminar – Operating the electricity system in 2020 and beyond

Alex Carter from National Grid outlined some of the challenges facing National Grid in the operation of the future electricity grid. Issues covered included balancing the variation between supply and demand, the variability of supply from renewables, the future use of interconnectors between the UK and Europe and changes in the electricity market. The seminar was followed by an exploratory workshop including four TSBE researchers investigating responsive electricity demand and energy system transitions.

The seminar was part of a series run by the University of Reading Energy Group, coordinated by Dr Phil Coker, Lecturer in Renewable Energy. Dr Coker’s research explores the characteristics and system impacts of energy variability. http://www.reading.ac.uk/CME/about/staff/p-j-coker.aspx
