Five EngD students from the TSBE centre visited two schools in Reading to deliver a workshop based around the science and engineering issues surrounding Christmas.
Year 7 and 8 students at Bulmershe School and Reading Girls School took part in the workshops which looked at four Christmas themes. They learnt their Christmas holidays affected the National Grid, discussed the issues around waste of food and packaging, calculated the electricity usage of Christmas lights and even worked out how much biofuel is needed for Santa’s sleigh ride!
At Reading Girls School, the students even made an eco-pledge for themselves based on things they had learned over the course of the day.
TSBE have several trained STEMnet ambassadors and are looking to develop more workshops relating to the research that is being carried out in the centre. The relationship with local schools is important and we hope to work with these schools again soon alongside others. Some of the Ambassadors will be at The Big Bang Fair as part of National Science and Engineering Week in March.
Thanks go to the STEMnet team at The University of Reading and all the ambassadors who helped develop the workshop.
