There are local elections on the 3 May and the deadline to register to vote is the 18 April. Wokingham Borough Council is urging students living in private accommodation to register well before that deadline date. As such they are promoting ‘Register to Vote Day on the 3 April. If you live in a Halls of Residence you are automatically registered to vote in the local elections.

Research by the Electoral Commission, the UK’s independent elections watchdog, has found that only 56% of 19-24 year olds were registered to vote in April 2011. This compares to 94% of those aged 65 and over. Many young people are actively involved in politics, yet they are one of the most under-registered groups in the country.

It’s easy to register: you can either call the Woking Borough Council helpline on 0118 974 6522 or 6523 or the Reading Borough Council helpline on 0118 937 3717. You can also visit to download an application form.

To vote in the election on 3 May, people need to be on the electoral register and be:

  • aged 18 or over on polling day, and
  • a British, Irish, EU or qualifying Commonwealth citizen
