Professor Robert Van de Noort, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Reading, said:

I am appalled by the terrible crime that occurred in Forbury Gardens last night. My thoughts and those of the whole University of Reading community are with those who are injured and their loved ones, and the families of those people who have tragically died.

I would like to thank our emergency services for their professional and fast response to this incident. The actions of police and medical staff will have saved lives. It is important that police can now investigate fully the circumstances and bring those responsible to justice.

The whole Reading community is in shock today. But our community is strong and I know that we will stand together to support one another in the days ahead. We have contacted the Leader of Reading Borough Council to offer any practical support the University can provide.

Reading is usually such a safe, friendly town that this incident feels particularly shocking. I know many of our students and my colleagues will be shaken by this news, and I encourage you to make use of our support services if you need them. The University’s 24-hour campus security team, who have helped to oversee the safety and security of our campuses throughout lockdown, will carry out visible uniformed patrols around campus in the next few days to provide reassurance.
