Having an end of term clear out? Tips for a smooth move

Clearing out to move out? Illustration of different coloured waste and recycling bins

If you are moving out of your rented house this summer, it’s likely you might have a lot to clear out, but where does it all go? Here are some tips to make it as simple as possible…

But first, want some advice from a fellow student? Hear Martina’s advice and move out story:

Recycle your unwanted items

  • Do you have lots of crockery, cutlery, clothing which you don’t want to take with you when you move? Bag up your unwanted stuff and take it to a red British Heart Foundation (BHF) charity bank on campus. You can use any bag; it doesn’t have to be a BHF one. Please do not put any sharp items or bedding into these.
  • There are plenty of charity donation banks in residential areas – use the ‘re3cyclopedia’ website or download the app to your phone to search by postcode.

Large waste items

  • If you have large items, such as a sofa or a mattress, you need to or take these items to the Tip. You must arrange a timeslot at the Tip and take proof of residence with you – find out more about Click and Tip.
  • You can also arrange for the council to collect large items (for a fee). Find more information on bulky waste collections.
  • Speak to your landlord to see if they can help recycle items or take things to the Tip

Glass bottles

  • Glass is not collected from properties – you need to take this to your local glass recycling bank. There are many of these in residential areas – use the ‘re3cyclopedia’ website or download the app to your phone to search by postcode.
  • Take the glass as soon as possible and do not leave it stacked by your bin or outside your property.
