As some of you may know, March is Women’s History Month, a hugely important month for so many reasons. This blog will share a little bit about what Women’s History Month is, why it is important, and what you could do to celebrate it!
So, what is Women’s History Month? Women’s History Month celebrates all of the amazing contributions that women have made to history and to improving people’s lives, both then and now. The theme of celebrating women goes on, as on the 8th March, International Women’s Day is celebrated. Women’s contributions were previously very overlooked, so this month aims to appreciate their sacrifices and commitment to change.
There are a huge number of women who contributed incredible things to society, including Rosa Parks, Abigail Adams, Amelia Earheart, and Harriet Tubman. There are also incredible women in today’s society who still go to such lengths to make the world a better place, including Malala Yousafzai and Serena Williams.
I have personally always been really inspired by Rosalind Franklin, a British scientist who made huge contributions to the discovery of the structure of DNA. Her work allowed scientists to make huge advances into cellular biology.
There are so many reasons why Women’s History Month is important to celebrate. It honours all of the sacrifices that women have made, and continue to make, to pave the way for gender equality around the world. Without many of these women, it would have taken much longer for women to have the opportunities they are able to nowadays. It is important to shine a light on the achievements these women have made in order to inspire future generations to continue to push for more opportunities and equal rights for people all over the world.
There are plenty of ways to celebrate Women’s History Month, and many of these can be done from the comfort of your own home. Why not listen to a podcast about some of the amazing, inspiring women throughout history? You could also watch a documentary, or read a book about some of these great women.
There are also more personal ways to celebrate Women’s History Month. You could celebrate some of your female friends by sending them a message telling them how much you appreciate them, or meeting up with them for a coffee. Similarly, you could appreciate women in your family by telling them how grateful you are for them.
