As Spring is upon us, and the weather begins to get a little warmer, we might not feel like staying indoors all the time. But as it’s not yet warm enough for sunbathing or picnics, and we’re still prone to rainy days, you might be wondering what there is to do at this time of year. There are many kinds of activities you could try, if you’re looking for some time outdoors you could consider;

Hiking 

There are many hiking paths in and out reading to get you out and about in the sunshine; It could be one you’ve done before, or something completely new. There are several paths along the River Thames you could try, including the Nation Trail or the Reading Abbey 1-Day Pilgrimage. If you’re looking for a nice day out, this could be something to try!   

Cycling  

There are many cycling routes in Reading, including the National Cycling Routes, that offers both on road cycling and quieter alternatives for those who like a calmer cycle. Bicycles are the most eco-friendly kind of travel, with no extra costs like fuel or tax, and you can cycle pretty much anywhere. Remember to check out the cycle routes and maps if you’re not so familiar with the area, and always take a drink with you to stay hydrated.  

Fishing

There are a number of fishing lakes in reading, some of which have season tickets, as well as three rivers; The Thames, Loddon and Kennet, with the Kennet and Avon Canal for canal fishing. If you’re looking for something new and peaceful to try, or getting out the old fishing gear again, why not head out there and see what you can find? It’s the perfect activity for a relaxing, but productive day.  

Beale Wildlife Park 

If you’re looking for something a little further afield, you might want to try Beale Wildlife Park, in Lower Basildon, only six miles from reading. With it’s large range of wildlife, from Alpaca’s to Reindeer, and a total of over 160 species, it could be an exciting day out, you can even book slots to meet the animals. 

Community Festival  

For the third year, the University of Reading is hosting a Community Festival. It is a free, one day event on Saturday 17th May, on Whiteknight’s campus. There will be live music, street food vendors, and a multitude of activities for adults and children to partake in.  

If you’re looking for activities to do inside anyway from the cold, you could try; 

Spring Cleaning 

Whilst this probably isn’t most people’s idea of fun, Spring is the perfect time for Spring cleaning. Starting early means you can get it done out of the way by the time summer comes along, and gives you the time to tackle each task at your own pace. You don’t need to cram it all into one day, equally, if you do, you might like to put some music on and have a dance or buy your favourite snacks so you can treat yourself afterwards, find ways to make it fun that work for you.  

Exhibitions  

Bayeux tapestry

Exhibitions can be a good way to get out of the house for a few hours, and many of them don’t require tickets or money, you can just turn up. There is the Arts and Makers Fair in Caversham, Bayeux Tapestry Tours on Saturdays at 14:00, to name a few. Have a look around and see what piques your interest, most of the time, all’s you need to do is turn up.  

Arts/Crafts  

Perhaps you could try landscape painting or origami? Find new ways to decorate your home or try something you don’t normally get to do, like pottery? You may want to find yourself a new hobby – perhaps learn an instrument, how to bake or how to draw? There are many creative things you can do indoors, whether to spruce up your place or just for something to do.  

It can be important during spring to keep your spirits up and your body moving, whether this is outside in the blossom or inside in the warmth.
