Many of you will soon be leaving your halls or student accommodation to go home for the summer and you may have items that you wish to get rid of. We have put together some Green Move Out tips to help you:
Use it again (and again)
Think about whether you can use the item again, do you really need to get rid of it or can you use it for something else? For example, instead of tossing out an old notebook, you might use the blank pages for jotting down quick study notes or planning your week.
Repair and mend
If the item is broken, can it be repaired or mended to give it a new lease of life? Many things you can repair yourself, for instance, you can darn a hole in your jumper. Some other things you can get repaired for a reasonable price, for example, a cobbler can replace the soles of your shoes – plus you’re suupporting a local business!
Rehome, share or donate
Can the item be given to someone else or donated to charity? If you live in Halls, items can be donated to the British Heart Foundation – find their crates in reception. If you live in the local community and miss the donation day, you can simply bring your items to a local charity shop – you can take along kitchenware, cutlery, clothing, bedding and small furniture.
Swap
Got a book you’ve finished reading or a top that’s not quite your style anymore? Ask a friend or neighbour if they’d like to swap!
Recycle
If you live in Halls, please follow their recycling guides or ask at reception. If you live in the local community, ensure you recycle correctly according to local council rules. For Reading Borough Council residents please see their guide, for Wokingham Borough Council residents consult their ‘what to put in recycling bags’ webpage.
Switch off
Finally, don’t forget to switch everything off in your accommodation before you leave- it’s a simple action that helps cut both carbon emissions and energy bills. A win-win for
Have a fantastic summer holiday!
