I am a student of the MSc in Plant Diversity at the University of Reading but am also a professional botanist in the Sultanate of Oman. My name is Azzah AlJabri and I am developing a website to accompany the Flora of the Sultanate of Oman; its aim is to provide ready and easily updatable access to the current state of knowledge about Oman flora. The website will include descriptions of the species, as well as images and other aids to identify each species. This website will form the basis of later work developing the flora.
The survey has now closed. See the draft web site here.
The Oman flora is a unique and diverse flora influencing by two continents Africa and Asia. However, knowledge of the Oman flora is still based on hard copy publication and there is no website concerning or publishing it. This project aims to build and develop a website for Sultanate of Oman flora by using scratchpad technology and the use two
exemplar genera (Blepharis & Barleria) as a model for future work. The reason behind choosing this project is because we need an easily updatable reference to the Oman flora that is easy and fast to search and use. Also, this provides a way to keep nomenclature and taxonomy current without the need to republish an entire book, and to contribute to the GSPC aim to produce a world flora online by 2020. Finally, to be linked to all Oman herbaria and other floras websites and to include all papers that are published on Oman flora.
Within the flora pages each species account will include: Species name, species description, locality, habitat, photos, coordinate, photo of type specimen (if available), distribution of species, red data list, species endemic to Oman, Arabic names, uses, flowering time, illustration if possible, species key by using Lucid key. There will be Links to other important websites such as The plant list, IPNI and the IUCN Red data list. In addition this website has two windows English and Arabic. This e-flora will be a full-scale resource and reference for Oman flora to many scientists, experts, researchers, students and interested people in Oman flora.
Thank you,
Azzah AlJabri
