Sunday 1st July: speckles of sun, overshadows of cloud and a chilly wind. Why do I spend so many of my posts talking about the weather? 83 people arrive: some Silchester survivors of seasons past, but many more new…untried……apprehensive…..nervous. I remember how I felt on my first excavation, and I do my best to reassure, encourage…….It all works – surprisingly – and we don’t seem to have lost anyone. All tents are up, the university barbeque eaten, the first washing-up done. I feel a sense of relief. It is finally underway. Again.
