Not into drinking? You can still have an unforgettable Welcome Week – Sofiia shares how.

Starting university is a significant event in anyone’s life. Many students consider Welcome Week to be the start of their university experience often imagined as being centred around drinking and nights out. But what if you’re not really into drinking culture? Don’t worry, I was the same and I managed to make my Welcome Week thrilling and full of activities. The great thing about Welcome Week at the University of Reading is that it doesn’t have to be about drinking to be unforgettable, there are plenty of events to go to at the beginning of your uni days, without ever going to a pub.

Try out societies

For me and many other, one of the best parts of university life is joining societies – and Welcome Week is the perfect time to explore them. Some sports, cultural and hobby-based societies run free taster sessions or trial events during the first week. You can try something new, meet people with similar interests, and even discover a new passion. I met a few of my university friends during the first get-together society event. I think this is the most efficient way to network and meet people at the beginning. My advice? Don’t limit yourself to just one society. You should try as many as you like because that’s what this week is for! Also, make a schedule of sessions that catch your eye and stick it on your wall or save it on your phone.

Walking tours

The University of Reading provides walking tours of the campus and local area. They’re an excellent method to identify all the key locations, including the library, the finest places to study, get groceries, and have a coffee. Figuring out where to grab the best coffee while also locating your 9 a.m. lecture hall can be stressful. Knowing my way around early saved me from getting lost and helped me feel much more at home – especially when going to the city centre.

Get-togethers

The University’s Welcome Team and the Students’ Union host a variety of informal, welcoming get-together events throughout Welcome Week and during the year. These are social gatherings such as quiz nights, board game nights, “Chill and Chat” coffee mornings, cultural socials, and my personal favourite – bingo. They’re a great opportunity to get to know people on campus and have a great time. All of it’s either free or super cheap, there’s often snacks and non-alcoholic drinks, and there’s always someone new to meet!

How to find events and opportunities?

The Home at Halls and Students’ Union apps were lifesavers for me. They made it so easy to discover all the activities I mentioned above. I had alerts set to “all events in next 24 hours” and never missed a thing!

You can also download the University’s official Welcome app or use the desktop version.

Welcome Week at Reading is about more than just drinking. By trying societies, guided tours, and joining SU events, you’ll start university with new friends and fun memories without a hangover.
