Clothing and background

Consider what might need changing to make your presentation of information more easily understood:

  • Clothing and background – have a contrast between your background and the colour of the top you are wearing

Clothing and background can be important, especially in terms of contrast when demonstrating something, as we show in these screenshots from University of Reading’s Begin Robotics on FutureLearn.

In Figure 1, the presenter is wearing a plain light shirt against a plain light grey background while demonstrating a mainly white robot. This is not ideal because it is difficult to see him against the background and the robot against him.

  • Captions and background

In Figure 2 the captions are white on black, but the background colour varies throughout the clip and sometimes the captions become less clearly visible.

At times the captions can obstruct what is being shown on the screen. Some research participants told us they would like the option of being able to move the captions, as a way around that.  Software exists to enable captions to be moved around. We say more about this under the Technical section.

Sometimes, with clips that are already pre-recorded, the viewer has the option to manipulate the position of the captions e.g. moving them to the top when the presenter might be showing something at the bottom of the screen or even switching them off if so desired, just for a few moments.

For this option to be enabled, software such as Yuja would need to be embedded into the clip.
