More on bananas

We grow two types of banana in the tropical glasshouse, the pink, seed containing, Musa dasycarpa, and the much larger edible banana with small yellow seedless fruit for which we do not know the cultivar.

There are some excellent web based resources on banana plants including the International Banana Society at bananas.org, a web site for enthusiasts and professionals, and now ‘ProMusa‘, a very professional site aiming to become a knowledge exchange for banana cultivation by farmers (both big and small).  Neither has yet published a key to cultivars but there are standard descriptors so this should be possible.  Perhaps one day I’ll be able to identify which cultivar our yellow banana is.
