Energy Storage for Power Networks Energy Seminar

A TSBE Centre Energy Seminar in association with The Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce.
This exciting seminar to explore the challenges for power networks and the commercial opportunities for energy storage on a large scale.
Speakers include Dr. Marek Kubik from AES corporation, Dr. Matthew Rowe, energy storage consultant with DNV GL Energy and Dr Ben Potter from the University of Reading.
EngD students Joshua Eadie and Katie McCausland have been invited to present posters at the SET Competition at Westminster.
The overall aim of STEM for BRITAIN is to encourage, support and promote Britain’s early-stage and early-career research scientists, engineers, technologists and mathematicians who are an essential part of continuing progress in and development of UK research and R&D. The academic partners of New Thames Valley Vision (NTVV) and Technologies for Sustainable Built Environments (TSBE) Centre at University of Reading are organising 4th LV workshop to disseminate learning from the NTVV project and encourage discussion between academia, Distribution Network Operators, industry and regulators. In continuation of the LV workshop series, the 4th workshop will cover the following topics:
1st of March 2017, Day 1 PM: 12.00 to 19.00
2nd of March 2017, Day 2 AM: 09.30 to 13.00
2nd of March 2017, Day 2 PM: 14.00 to 16.30 (Jointly with Thames Valley Chamber of Commerce):
The participants are expected to include active researchers in demand analytics and energy storage control as well as representatives from UK DNOs, Ofgem and industry. Confirmed speakers include: Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks, DNV GL, AES Corporation, University of Oxford, Newcastle University, University of Strathclyde, University of Manchester and University of Reading.

Marek was a student with the TSBE Centre, University of Reading for four years. During this time his research with AES Corporation led to his thesis entitled ‘The impact of high levels of renewable generation on conventional fossil fuel based electricity markets’, which he worked on with academic supervisors Professor Janet Barlow and Dr Phil Coker. The TSBE Centre is pleased to announce yet another award winning EngD student. Alice Gunn was recently presented with the KPMG PowerHouse 2030 Young Energy Professional of the Year award. This award ecognises an individual, who has displayed a real commitment to the energy industry and combined with their leadership & teamwork skills, has shown great potential as a future leader in the energy industry.

PowerHouse 2030 is a young energy professionals network that I have been involved with from the beginning with around 15 other young professionals from the sector (https://powerhouse2030.org/). KPMG kindly hosted the latest conference which focused on the topic of ‘sector convergence and the internet of things’ and chose the winner of this years award. Speakers at the conference included professionals from; TfL, Apple and BT.

The TSBE Centre’s Urban Biodiversity Group (BioUrb) was set up earlier in the year to help provide support for those researching biological and ecological areas within the built environment.
On Wednesday 7th December 2016 the BioUrb Group hosted its first lunchtime seminar. Speakers included Rob Parkin and Kerry Elliott who came to talk about Green Parks success in becoming the only business park in the UK to achieve the Wildlife Trusts Benchmark Award. TSBE EngD students Thomas Chung and Katie McCausland also gave presentations on their research projects.
The event attracted attendees from 4 different schools within the university and was an excellent networking opportunity for those studying urban biodiversity; which is by its nature often a multi-disciplinary area.
It is hoped the next event will be hosted in the new year, so watch this space for updates
The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) Science Poster Fair is an annual event which highlights the best of NPL’s scientific posters produced over the last year. This year TSBE Student Vasiliki Papaioannou, entered her poster considering ‘Electricity carbon intensity of the UK grid for the years 2009-2015‘ into the competition.
Vasiliki, who is supervised by Dr. Phil Coker and Dr. Ben Potter from the University of Reading, won second prize at the event. The judging panel, comprised NPL Fellows Richard Brown, Sasha Tzalenchuk and Bajram Zeqiri. All of whom were impressed by the quality of all the posters displayed, the breadth of subject matter covered, and the enthusiasm and knowledge of the presenters.
NPL Poster Fair
Posters are often overlooked as tools in communicating science, however, the NPL annual competition is a way of recognising how posters can provide a snap shot of research which can lead to further discussions around the topic. Judges base their decisions on the following criteria:
By creating a clear and concise poster (that can be seen below), Vasiliki impressed the judges and took home 2nd prize.
Electricity carbon intensity of the UK grid for the years 2009-2015
The School of Architecture will host the Reading Climate Forum on the evening of 17 November 2016, 6 – 8 pm. The Forum is part of a series of informative and networking meetings around climate change (risks, mitigation and adaptation), promoted by the Greater Reading Environmental Network and funded by the Reading Climate Action Network. The topic to be discussed is the effect that Architecture and Urban design has on new buildings and refurbishments to achieve low environmental impact. The discussion will focus on multiscale and multidimensional approaches across the built environment, as a precondition for environmentally sound and socially meaningful design.
The Forum is structured around three steps corresponding to different modalities of discussion. In the first part complementary research perspectives on the topic will be presented. A pitch session will introduce different views from practice professionals. A round table on “Local issues and local plans” with the public will conclude the Forum. Upon registration, participants will have the opportunity to submit a question for the round table.
The event is organised by Dr. Daniela Perrotti and Professor Lorraine Farrelly (School of Architecture), in collaboration with the Greater Reading Environmental Network.

Although this news is a little delayed, the TSBE Centre is delighted to announce that earlier this year Saadia Ansari, a final year EngD student in the TSBE centre was elected as chair of the CIBSE Young Energy Performance Group (YEPG).
The YEPG began in 2012 and is a subgroup of the CIBSE Energy Performance Group (EPG). Their focus is to provide a platform for the discussion and dissemination of innovative ideas and research on the energy performance of buildings. As their focus is on young engineers that are entering this growing industry, the group provides an open forum for discussions and hosts multiple opportunities for networking amongst its members. In addition to this the YEPG also hosts a number of CPD certified events throughout the year.
This is a great opportunity as such events and exposure to industry provide a unique opportunity for EngD’s and other academics to informally present their research to audiences outside of academia and to discuss this with industry experts. The group is very active throughout the year hosting a number of different types of events ranging from building tours to CPD certified informative talks, to the less formal annual quiz. On the 2nd December 2016 BSRIA is hosting an event on “Measuring Occupant Wellbeing”. The event is designed to help people better understand how to track and improve well-being in company buildings.
The TSBE Centre’s Trevor Keeling will be presenting a talk on “Using building data to predict well-being and productivity”. This will bridge both the work that he did as an Engineering Doctorate student and his current work at BuroHappold. The talk considers the challenges combining indoor environmental quality data and user experience data; to better understand people’s experience of their office environments.
The event has been organised by, Dr Michelle Agha Hossein, an alumni of the TSBE Centre.
