It is a challenging time for all of us at the minute with the current restrictions and public health concerns. If you find that your mental health is has been affected by recent Covid-19 issues, or perhaps there has been something troubling you that’s unrelated to this, it may help to speak with someone in the University’s Counselling & Wellbeing Team.
The Counselling & Wellbeing Team is part of Student Services. Our multidisciplinary team consists of qualified Counsellors, Mental Health Nurses and Social Workers as well as counselling volunteers. The team work throughout the year Monday- Friday (including summer months but excluding public holidays and University closure days) to help students through brief interventions, manage a range of issues, to minimise the impact of any problems on their academic progress. The service is open to all registered students (undergraduate or postgraduate) at the University and is free of charge.
The first step to getting in touch with someone on the team is to register here.
Once you have registered, a member of staff will be in touch either via e-mail or telephone to arrange a suitable appointment time. Currently, all our appointments are via telephone or video-call through Microsoft Teams (each student will have access to this through their university email account).
The first appointment will be a short Triage assessment of your needs. From this appointment it will be decided, with you, the most appropriate plan moving forward. That can mean you’re placed on a waitlist to have follow up support from either a Mental Health Advisor or Counsellor in the team or alternatively, the best option may be to register with an external support agency, such as NHS or specialist organizations.
The Counselling & Wellbeing Team offer a limited number of sessions per student, this is to ensure fair access to support for each student but also to ensure that it does not interrupt with your studies too much. We work in partnership with various other teams within the University so we may signpost you to another service that can help also.
Often it does help to talk, so please follow the link above to get in touch.
