Top up your degree: learn a language with the IWLP

Why not make the most of your university experience by learning a language alongside your main degree? The Institution-Wide Language Programme offers optional modules in 10 languages at a number of levels and all students are welcome!

While English remains a powerful player on the international stage, having additional languages in your skillset will only ever provide you with more opportunities whether for travel and enjoyment, a placement or studies abroad, or in your future workplace.

The Institution-Wide Language Programme (IWLP) offers modules in 10 languages, alongside whatever you are studying for your main degree. All our languages are available at a number of levels, so you can start a language from scratch or continue a language you have already started. Choose from: Arabic, British Sign Language, Chinese (Mandarin), French, German, Italian, Japanese, Modern Greek, Russian or Spanish. Thanks to our personal and engaging small group teaching, you will start using the language from the first day in the classroom, and you will get to know students from across the campus at all levels of study. As well as gaining language knowledge, you will gain an insight into the culture of the countries where the language you are studying is spoken and an appreciation of people from different cultural backgrounds.

“I never had an interest in languages, as I know English. But I decided to take French and broaden my scope. I really enjoyed learning something new, growing as a person and also it was fun taking a break from my Law modules.” – Whitney, former IWLP French student. To hear from more former students, check out our blog.

You can enrol for our modules during the upcoming module selection, but if you have any questions, drop us an email: iwlp@reading.ac.uk or visit our website. You are also able to take our modules as non-credit for a fee. Non-credit students can get more information on our website.

Please note: This is for all students picking modules in April.
