Re-applying for your Student Loan

Academic year 2024/25: SFE and SFW full-time undergraduate student finance applications are now open

You need to re-apply for your that tuition fee and maintenance loan each year, it’s best to do this as soon as possible to ensure that the payments will not be delayed and you receive your first maintenance loan instalment at the start of the new academic year. Head to the government student finance website for up-to-date application details, managing your account, or finding further support. 

How much can you get? 

  2024/2025 Academic year  

  • Living with your parents Up to £ up to £8,610
  • Living away from your parents, studying outside London – up to £10,227
  • Living away from your parents, studying in London –  Up to £13,348
  • You spend a year of a UK course studying abroad –  Up to £11,713
  • If you’re over 60 or over on the first academic year of your course – Up to £4,327

If you’re in your final year of study 

  2024/2025 Academic year 

  • Living with your parents – Up to £8,102
  • Living away from your parents, studying outside London –  Up to £9,672
  • Living away from your parents, studying in London – Up to £12,367
  • You spend a year of a UK course studying abroad – Up to £10,485
  • If you’re over 60 or over on the first academic year of your course – Up to £4,327

When to apply 

Apply as soon as you can, applications are now open for 2024/25. You may still apply up to 9 months after the start of the academic year but delays will occur if you do. 

How to re-apply 

When applying online go to the government student finance website, and login to your student finance account.

  1. Check your personal details – before you re-apply for your student loan make sure to check all your personal details are now correct. This includes a change of home address, phone number, any changes to bank details. Check them now 
  2. Check your course fees – the next step is to confirm your course fees. This is the amount you are charged for your course. Check this is correct to ensure you get the right loan from student finance.  
  3. Applying for higher amount of maintenance loan – If you’re applying for a higher amount of maintenance loan you’ll need to provide the email of your parent(s)/guardian(s)/ legally recognised partner so that student finance can access your combined household income. If you’re over 25 and single, only your income is considered.
  • Full details on how they assess your household income can be found on the guidance pages of the government website.
  • Once the application is sent, your parent(s)/guardian(s)/partner will receive emails if they’re relevant to your application. You’ll get a letter soon after to the address you provided confirming your application and explaining if any other details are required. 

Postal: Through the PR1 form 

The PR1 form is the application form you will complete if you are a full-time continuing student who wishes to submit your application by post.

This form requires you to provide the same information as you would online. However, on this form you will also have to provide your parent(s)/guardian(s) details.
 
Did you take time out for personal reasons? You may need to send a letter to student finance to explain why you suspended your studies. Full details of what you will need to include in this letter can be found on the ‘how to apply’ pages on the government’s student finance website.

  • Check out the Placement Bursary page on Essentials to see if you’re eligible for help with costs of travel for study or work placements.
  • Search and apply for UK scholarships, grants or bursaries for university on The Scholarship Hub’s database of funding for UK/EU undergraduates and postgraduates.

The Student Financial support team are available to provide advice and support on money related matters, whether it’s regarding your tuition fee or maintenance loan, Bursaries and Awards or advice on how we can support you if you are experiencing unexpected financial difficulties.
