Looking after yourself over the Winter Vacation

After a long and (particularly cold) first semester, the winter holidays are almost here! The holiday season can be an exciting and restful time, but it can also be a little stressful. Whether you’re heading home or staying in Reading, it’s essential to prioritise your physical and mental health during the winter months. Here’s how to stay warm, healthy, and happier during this holiday season.

Keep Your Immune System in check

Stock Up on Winter Remedies:

  •  Add immune-boosting ingredients like ginger, lemon, and honey to your shopping list. These can added into your cooking to keep you warm and support your immune system.
  • You can find a variety of teas to boost your health, like Twinings—my personal favorite is their “Immune Support” blend. These are available at Sainsbury’s, Marks & Spencer, and Holland & Barrett, which even offers a 20% discount with UNiDAYS!

Stay Hydrated:

  • We tend to forget to drink water when the weather gets colder, but hydration is key to staying healthy and avoiding getting sick.

Take Your Vitamins

  • With the shorter days, many of us don’t get enough vitamin D, especially being in the UK. Consider taking supplements and vitamins to support your immune health. If you feel yourself getting sick you may want to consider some Vitamin C. You can get these vitamins for a very affordable price at Boots and Superdrug, which both also offer student discounts

Staying Warm and Cozy

Keeping warm doesn’t just prevent illnesses like colds, but can also make the wintertime a more manageable and enjoyable experience.

(Anti) Layering:

  • If you’re like me and hate the sensory experience of too many layers, investing in thermal clothing be a life saver. Shops like UNIQULO have excellent heat technology clothing that are perfect if you dislike many layers.

Warm Your Space:

  • We all know that as the years go by, the cost of living, including energy and heating prices have skyrocketed. In fact it is reported that in 2022 energy bills increased by 49.1%. Using hot water bottles and heated blankets, keep your room toasty without cranking up the heating. These things can all be bought at a reasonable price in TK Maxx as well as Primark in Reading town.
  • If you need to warm up a larger space, consider investing in a plug-in heat fan from Amazon. These devices are energy-efficient, helping you stay cozy without significantly increasing your energy bills.

Support for Finances during Winter

  • If you’re worried about heating costs, the University of Reading offers advice and support for students struggling with bills.

You can find more information about financial advice and support at the University of Reading.

Prioritise Mental Health Over the Holidays

The festive season isn’t always joyful for everyone. In fact, it is reported that the winter holiday season is of the loneliest time of the year. If you’re overwhelmed, or stressed here are some tips to help:

Take Time for Yourself:

  • Use the break to do some hobbies you might have neglected during term time. Whether it’s reading, painting, baking, or journaling, spending time on activities you enjoy can help you feel fulfilled and relaxed amongst winter chaos.

Sunlight Lamp:

  • If you’re feeling down due to shorter days, a sunlight lamp can mimic natural sunlight and help improve your mood and energy levels. They’re especially helpful for tackling SAD.

Stay Connected

  •  If you’re staying in Reading and can’t go home, make plans with friends or attend community events. The university often hosts holiday meetups for students staying on campus.

Reach Out if You Need Support

  • The University of Reading offers free mental health support through its Counselling and Wellbeing Service. You can also reach out to helplines like ‘Tellmi’ if you need someone to talk to.

Taking care of yourself over the winter break is all about balance. Stay healthy, keep warm, and take time for your mental well-being. Whether you’re relaxing, doing hobbies, connecting with loved ones, or simply enjoying downtime, small steps can make a big difference. Prioritise yourself this holiday season and come back refreshed for the year ahead!
