Beyond the Degree: Smoothing Your Transition from Student to Adult

Crowd of graduation hats.

Congratulations, you did it! Those late-night study sessions and endless exams have all been worth it. You’re now a graduate ready to embark on your next stage of life.

Now the confetti’s settled, and you’re back in your childhood home, you might be sat there wondering…”what’s next?”

Let’s look at how you can shift gears from student life to adulthood as smoothly as possible.

Consider Different Paths

It can be tricky, and easy to do, but don’t compare yourself to your peers. Everyone has different aspirations and visions of where they want to go in life, so it’s important to hold onto yours. Regardless of how different it is.

There’s more than one option available when deciding what to do next.

Take a Gap Year

If unready to jump straight into the working world, consider a gap year. It’s a great opportunity to explore the world and visit dream destinations. Not only is it fun, but it’s a once in a lifetime experience that you can’t put a price tag on.

Pursue Your Passion

Use this time to focus on the hobbies that got pushed aside while being a student. Perhaps you never had time before to have a hobby, what better time than now! Whatever it is, use this time to delve into what truly drives you.

Teach Abroad

If you love to travel and are perhaps considering a career in teaching, why not combine the two? Teaching abroad can be a rewarding experience. You could pass on the knowledge you’ve spent years studying and keep it fresh in your own mind too. Bonus points if you get to learn a new language.

Embrace Adulting

Life after graduation isn’t just about finding a career. You’re also taking on new responsibilities like moving out and managing personal finances. Play ‘house’ and invite friends over for dinner. Take joy from doing a weekly food shop and cooking for one. Have fun entering this new stage in your life, and don’t rush.

Look After Your Mental Health

One thing to remember is that it’s normal to feel a surge of emotions after you graduate- it’s a mark of the beginning of a new chapter after all. Make sure to set aside time to prioritise yourself, so your mood stays high.

  • Start a Routine. A regular routine gives your day framework. It can boost efficiency and reduce stress.
  • Stay Active. Exercise is beneficial for your body, and mind. Regular physical activity can drastically improve your mood by releasing endorphins.
  • Eat Well. What you eat can affect your mood. It’s easier than you think to incorporate fresh produce and lean proteins into your meals. Just try to avoid processed foods as they can lead to mood swings.
  • Sleep. Sleep is key for both physical and mental health. Rest is what gives you energy for the day ahead. Try aim for 7-9 hours per night and take power naps in the day if needed.
  • Be Social. Stay in touch with friends from university and reach out to family. Buddies and relatives can be a listening ear when you need it most.
  • Seek Professional Help. If you start to feel like you’re beginning to cave under the pressure and need someone to talk to- try a helpline. These people are specially trained to help people in these situations navigate their feelings.

Welcome the Unknown

Firstly, pat yourself on the back and congratulate yourself. Take some well-deserved time out to celebrate your accomplishments. Have a party with friends or go for a quiet dinner with family. Choose an activity that rewards you in the best way possible.

Next, it can be incredibly easy to dive in too quickly and want to achieve everything. Try to set realistic expectations. Resist putting extra pressure on yourself and take it in your stride. Don’t set your sights too high or push yourself too hard. You don’t need to know the answer to everything – you can’t predict the future!

Life is full of the unknown, that’s what makes it so exciting. Life after graduation can feel like sailing uncharted waters but uncertainty can be exciting. Although unnerving, it can also present opportunities you never dreamed of. Trust that things will always work out in the end.

Conclusion

Transitioning from student life to adulthood can seem unsettling. Take comfort in the fact that plenty of adults have been in your shoes before, you’re not alone. With these tips, you can begin this new chapter of life ready for anything that comes your way.
