What is the Skills module?

The skills module is available to all students with a MyJobsOnline (MJO) profile and is designed to help you understand your competency across 10 different skills and areas for improvement. It also allows you to pre-prepare skills statements that you can use in future job applications and interviews.

The skills module is comprised of three key sections:

1) The skills assessment

The skills assessment asks you to self-report on 10 generic employability skills. The self-assessment tool allows you to identify your level of competency for each skill and its three sub-attributes. After this you will be able to see your results, and compare them with any previous ones on this framework.

Top Tip: There are 30 questions in the skills assessment, so leave yourself enough time to properly go through them without distractions.

2) The skills report

The skills report allows you to see your progress with each skill and work with it in several ways, whether it’s identifying key areas that you want to work on or looking back over previous assessments to see how far you have come.

Skills can be ranked at 4 different levels:

  • Developing
  • Competent
  • Proficient
  • Advanced

3) Recording skill statements

Skill statements are, again, purely for your own use, but they give you the opportunity to record information about your developments in a skill. These statements can be exported to Excel, so once you leave university you’ll have a clear list of your work on each of the skills.
This section isn’t limited to the 10 skills measured in the skills assessment; you can add your own labels to really tailor the information you’re adding.

Top Tip: Skill statements a great way to prepare for writing applications – you can add skill statements here that you can then use in future job applications, and the best part is that you’ll have a lot of information pre written!

How do I access the skills module?

When you log into MJO, you should have an option for ‘Skills’ in the menu – click on it. If it’s the first time the skills menu is loaded for you, a button will be shown to complete a skills assessment. Work through each question, choosing the statement which you feel best describes you at the point of doing the assessment.

If you’re having any difficulty accessing the skills module – please do contact the Careers team at careers@reading.ac.uk with screenshots showing your issues.
