Last year, I wrote a blog about the power of ‘Ta-da’ and ‘To-do’ lists, and as I returned to work this week, I decided to follow my own advice. Sitting down with a blank sheet of paper, I reflected on what I’ve achieved over the past year (don’t worry, I won’t bore you with my list!).
Now, I’ll admit my memory isn’t the best—it’s not just my age; it seems to run in the family! So, while my list felt a bit short, I know my family, friends, and colleagues could probably add a lot more. This inspired me to revisit an idea I saw circulating on social media over the festive season—one that’s all about tracking and celebrating successes.
The Idea: Capture and Celebrate Your Wins
You don’t need anything fancy to do this. Some people use jars to collect notes of their achievements throughout the year. Personally, I use a ‘feedback’ folder in my email, where I save the lovely thank-you messages I’ve received from students and colleagues. These little notes mean so much and are a great reminder of the positive impact we make, especially when I need a boost!
This year, I’m going one step further. I’ve created a digital notebook with two lists: one for professional achievements and one for personal ones. (As a parent, I think it’s important to recognise what I accomplish at home as much as what I achieve at work!)
I’ve also set myself a monthly reminder to review and update these lists. When I prepare for my one-to-one meetings with my manager, I’ll add links to feedback emails and jot down notes. This way, I’m starting 2025 with a positive mindset and staying mindful of my progress throughout the year.
Looking Ahead: Professional Development
Once I’ve finished reflecting, it’s time to tackle my ‘To-do’ list! I have plenty of ideas for my professional development this year, but my priority will be carving out dedicated time to work on it—and celebrating these milestones along the way.
Your Turn: Make It Work for You
Whether you use a sticky note jar, a notebook, or an Excel sheet, the key is to do it! It’s a simple habit that can boost your confidence and motivate you to keep going.
