Our Law Careers Fair is only a week away! Taking place in 3Sixty on Wednesday October 30th  13:00-15:00 (12:30-13:00 quiet time*) and open to all disciplines, it’s an amazing opportunity to network with professionals across various law firms and training providers whether you want to learn about what opportunities they offer, or are interested in transitioning into law from another degree.

We understand it can feel daunting approaching possible employers when trying to pursue a career in law, but it’s important to prepare yourself so you can feel confident on the day.

Who’s attending the Law Careers Fair?

30 law firms and training providers are attending this year’s Law Careers Fair including:

  • The University of Law
  • Crown Prosecution Service (CPS)
  • Field Seymour Parkes
  • Capital Law Ltd
  • HMCTS

You can find full information on all the exhibitors including which areas of law they cover and what kind of opportunities they offer on MyJobsOnline. By looking before the fair, this will help you feel more prepared and confident once you start approaching exhibitors.

How should I prepare for the Law Careers Fair?

Create an elevator pitch. A great first impression is a must for any networking event, and the Law Careers Fair is a great place for you to practice an elevator pitch that’s ready once you apply for jobs. Keep it simple (maximum 60 seconds) and have it reveal the following:

    • Who you are
    • What makes you unique
    • Who you want to offer your services to

Ask questions. Preparing questions is always important, and one way to make them more meaningful is by tailoring them to each firm/training provider instead of throwing the same blanket questions left, right and centre. Also remember to consider who you’re speaking with, for example:

    • Graduate recruiter: Are there opportunities for Pro Bono work or other kinds of short work experience?
    • Trainee: Is there any scope to contribute ideas to the firm as a trainee?
    • Partner: Are you a full service firm, and what would you say are your two most important practice areas?

Top Tips

  1. Do your research. Use your time before the Law Careers Fair to explore everything you can about the firms and training providers attending. For example, firm size/type, locations(s) they work in, what they can offer you, i.e. training contracts/vacation schemes, and the cases/clients they’ve represented.
  2. Be yourself (but keep it professional). The Law Careers Fair is a chance to put yourself out there and be open about what you’re looking for when speaking with exhibitors, but remember this is a professional event. Get in the right frame of mind, dress appropriately and take care of your body language/eye contact. If you’re feeling nervous, try practicing your elevator pitch with a firm that’s not on top of your list.
  3. Keep notes. Your experience at the Law Careers Fair doesn’t have to end at 3PM. Use your time afterwards to look through notes and reflect on the key takeaways you got out of attending. Create personalised requests on LinkedIn and keep notes on team members’ names. They all could come useful once you start filling in application forms.

We look forward to seeing you next week!
